Frida Painting

The work is inspired by two sources: the iconography of the Flemish Renaissance portraits that Frida Khalo loved, and the artist's own works. This portrait is a tribute to an exceptional and inspiring artist. It takes up what she loved. Painted from a black and white photograph, the hairstyle is replaced by her famous plaited chigon. The background is composed of Mexican plants. She was so fond of flowers that people refer to her as a flower-woman. She represented them in pretty compositions. The work here is painted in the traditional way using pigments from the south of France. This is in keeping with the practice of the artist, who also painted with local pigments. Finally, I hope that this work inspires you as much as it inspires me.
