The inspiration behind my colourful acrylic on canvas series was born out of a prolonged period of illness, during which I felt estranged from my body and its functions. This state of bedridden limbo lasted for nearly two years, leaving me a mere shadow of my former self. The year 2020-2022 was marked by loss, personally and globally with dear family and friends departing, trust being shattered, and my once-healthy physique and cognitive faculties in disarray. In the midst of it all, my solace was found in drawing on my digital tablet while confined to my bed. During this time, I developed a fascination for the female form and its expression of grief and vulnerability. I sought to explore the transformative power that comes from experiencing loss and grief. The strength and resilience of the human spirit that can emerge from the darkest of times. I sought to portray this power and inner strength through the distorted faces of my female subjects, whom I dubbed as "balaclava demon heads." Fans of my previous works are familiar with my penchant for the absurd and distorted. I aimed to depict how grief can be an empowering experience. It reveals what remains, and how the intensity of emotions such as rage can serve as fuel to overcome times of uncertainty, fear, and doubt. My intention was to transform my own confused, shattered world into a bright, colourful canvas that serves as a beacon of reinvention and self-discovery.
