Gaias Dance Painting

This painting was made during two cyclone events, the last one being notable as Ita. It occurred to me that regardless of scientific explanations for these events, the general perception of cyclones is personal and probably due to the method of giving cyclones human names. This may be because like us, they appear to determine individual paths. The anguish of course, immediately attaches itself to the name. It caused so much offense at one stage that the Bureau of meteorology were forced to change their policy to exclude names of political leaders. It is a myth that these forces think or deliberately devastate communities out of spite. Its also an unhelpful myth to contend with when one is directly affected. Using the concepts of mythology, this painting is intended to create a healing explanation. The girl in the picture is Gaia dancing with bellydance apparel coinciding with the myth that this dance has the potential to cause earthquakes. As she twirls in motion with her bubble blower, the symbol of chaos emerges out of the cyclones eye. Like us, she is distracted by the delight, but unaware of the destruction caused beneath her feet.
