About The Artwork

This painting was previously on display at Kneedler-Fauchère, within the San Francisco Design Center. In this series, I look to nature for inspiration. I am thinking of the feeling evoked when light filters through trees in a forest or a colorful garden, and the connectedness, freedom and abandon one feels when immersed in the natural world. I pay great attention to creating a sense of depth. Whether I achieve this through the tools used to subtract paint from the surface, the undulating light and dark waves of color or the layering dry brush work under and over the sinuous botanical carvings, themes of depth and transience found in nature are always close at hand. These attributes lend a photographic quality to the paintings, one that evokes movement and a clarity that has been intentionally obscured, as if the images are being dissolved or have just emerged to the surface.

BIO Anne Terpstra (b. SF, 1986) is an abstract painter, printmaker and photographer based in San Francisco. Anne’s work across mediums is rooted in abstract expressionist traditions and her current work in oil painting and cyanotype is heavily influenced by her background as a printmaker, with its emphasis on process and in its use of reductive techniques. Some of her influences include expressionists: Robert Rauschenburg, Gerhard Richter and Lee Krasner. Anne’s current work investigates painting as it relates to movement, evanescence, and subconscious process. For Anne, painting is a revolt, a kind of constant rebellion against the transitory nature of life. In looking at her work, we are struck by the immediacy of the paint, but also of a whole past life under the work. She is inspired by the tactility of the paint itself, and often starts with more paint than a palette knife or brush can comfortably hold, thereby creating a challenge which demands a physical response to the materials themselves. She states, “I’m interested in exploring how a painting originates in this way, and creating images where presence and absence are inextricably linked.” She draws much inspiration from the natural world and the California coast as she states, “I draw abstractly from my memory of natural landscapes, ocean sides, and the experience of the play of light in these environments.” Anne’s work in printmaking and photography has been published on CD packages by the internationally recognized jazz and world music label, Adventure Music, New York. Her latest art in cyanotype is featured on the cover of “Vignette,” a new duet album by bassist and composer Viktor Krauss, and harpist Maeve Gilchrist. (Released: April 2017).
