Gariwerd I Painting

Gariwerd is the Jardwadjali and Djab wurrung peoples' name for the mountain range in Victoria that was mapped for the British Empire by Major Thomas Mitchell and which he named 'The Grampians' after the range of mountains in his homeland of Scotland. Gar means 'pointed mountain' and werd means 'shoulder'. I have used the name Gariwerd in favour of Grampians for no other reason than because I think 'pointed mountains that look like shoulders' is entirely a more accurate name than naming them for the rounded heather-clad whale-back hills where I grew up. Unlike my larger studio paintings the paintings in this series were made outdoors in the unforgiving Australian sun. I hope the immediacy of the brushstrokes shares some of the beauty and hostility of this environment. These works are unframed acrylic paintings on 3mm MDF (like untempered masonite). Because the medium is robust (they have to survive rock-hopping in my rucksack) these works may be framed mounted under glass but are perfectly happy in a 'shadowbox' or similar frame without glass.
