About The Artwork

From my "Alpine Europe" series: What a pleasant surprise this charming little town in the heart of Switzerland turned out to be. Just a rest stop along the highway traveling toward Bern, Interlaken provided spectacular views of the Swiss Alps and traditional architecture. Like all of Switzerland, the village was spotlessly clean and the air was cool and refreshing. This particular view at the entrance to the town provided the very best of everything that Interlaken had to offer with spectacular colors of the spring garden, the bright green field, the rays of the morning sun strong on the face of the buildings and of course the snow covered peaks of the mountain range. Interlaken is a small resort town in central Switzerland situated between Lake Brienz and Lake Thun in the first range of the Bernese Alps. Tourism is the major industry. Originally the site of an Augustinian convent (founded in 1130), Interlaken was virtually unknown until the 19th century, when interest in the Alps began to draw tourists to the area.

Art and the natural world have been the driving forces that have shaped Jerrys life and career. Self-taught, Jerry can not remember a time when he wasnt painting, studying art and the great artists, or developing an affinity and never-ending infatuation with the phenomenal beauty of Nature.Collectors of Jerry Sauls work appreciate the fine detail, perspective and imaginative use of light simulation with which he portrays an innate understanding of his chosen subjects. As I see it, the challenge to me as an artist, is not only to paint nature in all her glory and diversity, but also to capture the emotion a scene evokes and incorporate that emotion into the mixing of paint on my palette and into my brushstrokes as the paint is applied to the canvas. Detail, color and texture are as important to my work, as light and the elements are to nature. When planning a new work of art, I like to think about something I have experienced, and how the image can be influenced by natural elements like light and weather. Often, I will begin working with a particular image in my mind, and as I progress, wonderful things seem to happen, transforming my visual image as it is passed onto the canvas. As a result, the completed work is sometimes very different from my original vision.
