Some time ago, me and my daughter Iris, were dressed up as a Geisha in a cozy tea house situated in the old neighborhood of Edo (Tokyo). It was a special ritual, we were wrapped in many layers of soft, silk fabrics with beautiful patterns, we were well tied. We wore white socks with one toe in high wooden slippers, our necks (in an elegant v-shape) and faces whitened, the mouths cherry red. We felt like paradise birds in our brilliantly colored kimonos, ready to show our skills in dancing, music and keeping the conversation flowing to the rich men, like in the old times of Edo. Instead of that we walked a little up and down the street with the ancient wooden houses with a lantern, where our family took some nice photos of us. Recently I painted this geisha because it came out like that; I let myself be surprised by it. It is on a loose hanging canvas. A strong Japanese woman with leaves and patterns and many green-bluish colors and a jug. It will be send to you in a tube. Let art color your life!

In a short docu I show you my latest series of paintings in my studio. In Dutch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPrjF3D0Irs&t=61s Living in a not-too-big city in the south of the Netherlands, the Dutch visual artist Sylvia Thijssen walks every day to her studio. It is a four kilometers walk wherein she crosses two small rivers. It is an excellent distance to free her mind of domestic affairs for to let the muse in. It is in this sunny, personal space that she paints her colorful canvasses, in active gestures big and small, like dancing, always trying to hear the colors sing together, searching for an energy wherein is also the peace of a moment in eternity, taking time as if the paint forms a structure that grew and matured. Thijssen is not thinking of her work as making paintings, no, these are adventures. Exciting adventures for her as a painter to make new experiences for the one who is looking at them. These adventurous paintings are meant to wander the mind and to wonder the eye. See also her website: http://www.sylviathijssen.nl
