About The Artwork

I work with oil because I love the strong colors, the texture, and the feel of working with the pigment. I use my hands, palette knives, and brushes. This work was inspired by another artist I had seen using tiny brush strokes to create a lot of texture. I used a brush and increased the size of the strokes and chose colors that resonate positive feelings for me. The title is based on a story I'd heard about the metaphorical search for the perfect lamp.

Carolyn Brann is known for her gestural abstractions full of color, texture and metal leaf. She combines active application of raw color and creative geometric dot patterning that take the viewer on a meditative journey across the canvas. Brann often starts a piece with a particular direction in mind, but the process of creation produces a completely different outcome from her original intention. Many of her works are influenced by her daily Vedic meditation and kundalini practices. While in meditation, visions of color and shapes enter her mind - these are often derived from memories of objects from the natural world or pure visions of visual stimulation. The dot patterning is in itself a meditation, much like an unplanned thought series - the patterns are asymmetrical, unbalanced and meandering. Vibrant gold and other metal leaf appear as pops of unmistakable positivity, strength, and interruptions from darkness. Brann lived and worked in San Diego, California until August 2020 where she supplemented her practice by working with local artist, Nasser Pirasteh. She recently relocated to Berlin, Germany where she is continuing to add to her body of work. She has been selling work and participating in shows in southern California since 2013.
