About The Artwork

This piece is a portrait of my grandmother holding my mother when she was a baby. It was planned as a mother´s day gift for mom. She has it in her house. My grandmother used to be a very beautiful woman, astonishing. She was from Manabí, a place here where people say that the most beautiful woman in the world comes from. She was so classical, simplistic, and elegant in her way to dress. She looked like a Hollywood movie star even when she had children. My mother is her first child. She had a pretty tough life, but she was always a ridiculously generous, extremely loving person. Something I always remember about her is something my mother told me: "no matter how beautiful she was, we always were poor, we never suddenly got relieved from our poorness, she never sell herself even when she could, she had 3 or 4 jobs instead". I want people to reflect on the pureness of her soul, she was an abandoned woman for her own decision, she never married grandfather, he abandoned her after she refused, and having 2 of his daughters, she regretted later. She was always in need. She was not "pure" in her time, because of the pre-marital sex or because she refused to marry. But, God, she was pure in her intentions, in the love she gave my grandfather, in the way she fought for her children, how she refused to bring other men near her daughters, the way she had to accept her faith after my mom never forgot her not gave her a father, how she was as beautiful as the sun. I chose pastel because of the pureness of white.

An Ecuadorian artist, navigates the local artistic landscape with a distinctive approach, diverging from the typical dichotomy prevalent among Quitenian artists. Rather than aligning with the bohemian left or the elite, art-educated right, Angela embraces her identity as an ambitious Quitenian with a down-to-earth perspective. Balancing her artistic pursuits with a middle-class sensibility, Angela introduces a unique voice in the narrative of Ecuador's art scene. She modestly considers herself a sui generis expressionist, influenced by her early exposure to art through her mother, Angie, and the captivating oil-painting sessions with her aunt-in-law, the esteemed artist Micaela Almeida.Angela's artistic journey began with humble doodles of flowers, symbolizing intimacy and family bonds. Her style, marked by an indiscriminate use of colors, reflects her innate creativity. Turning to digital mediums for expression, she reserves traditional materials for moments of artistic freedom. Angela, embracing vulnerability, desires a return to the simplicity of white canvases. She discreetly embeds messages in her art, inviting viewers to discover joy in nature scenes, and showcasing Quitenian humor with humility and depth.
