Inspired by the women of Guna Yala (San Blas) Guna Yala, also known as San Blas is an archipelago off Panama’s eastern coast that contains more than 300 islands, 49 of which are inhabited by the indigenous Guna (also known as Cuna/Kuna people). The Guna migrated from South America to their current location sometime in the 15th century. 50,000 - 80,000 strong, the Gunas still live as their ancestors did. Women are the main food distributors, property owners and decision makers. True to their matrilineal structure, the Guna are matrilocal which dictates that upon marriage, couples move into the bride's family home. All essential possessions such as land, animals and other valuables belong to the matriarch of the family, not the patriarch. Here is one society where women can earn substantially higher - up to $50 per mola - than men, who typically earn $20 per day fishing for lobsters or cleaning the bottom of boats for tourists. Guna Yala is extraordinary in many ways; but perhaps the most notable one is the Guna people’s natural gender equality – and complete tolerance, if not celebration, of gender fluidity.

I am a London based artist working primarily with acrylics. I enjoy the versatility of the medium as I have the flexibility of choosing between a water colour approach, oil like approach or trying new ways. My paintings mostly start off as ideas and concepts, which I compose in my head. Once I’m happy with the subjects, the colours and the placement, I then translate this to my chosen medium. I use a lot of colour symbolism in my paintings and even match backgrounds with the subjects I paint.
