Gypsy Painting

Public choice award 2016 « Printemps des Arts » Reims, France. The Gypsy emerged when I participated to the « Printemps des Arts », a competition which took place in 2016 in Reims. The challenge: various artists scattered across the city in front of emblematic places and monuments in order to transcribe them on a canvas through the artist’s vision all that within a limited time. The basilica « Saint-Rémi » in front of which I stood brought back to my mind this curiosity for history that I’ve always had. I wanted to establish a link between Victor Hugo and this monument as it is where he first had the idea of the characters Esmeralda and the Hundback (and not in front of Notre-Dame-de-Paris as everyone think as is generally believed). On the foreground: I used a paintbrush, a bird feather and she appeared, the gypsy who danses, turns and swirls to the rhythm of her tambourine. Victor Hugo’s quote: « Art, it is the reflection that returns to the human soul the dazzling splendor of the beautiful." follows the movement of her petticoat. On the background: I used a few chicory, a bit of water and the colors sprung up from the rose window.
