"Hands up, don't shoot", or simply "hands up", is a slogan and gesture that was adopted by people protesting police violence. In this painting, I reference Panels 22 and 41 from Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series. Lawrence said of this series, “To me, migration means movement. There was conflict and struggle. But out of the struggle came a kind of power and even beauty.” This is a painting of both triumph and adversity as we migrate towards a more just society and a reformed justice system. The painting is made with oil paint on cradled Baltic birch panel. It is signed and varnished.
