The subject of this painting is my sister Hannah, taken from a photograph I took of her with the painting in mind. One of my first oil paintings, this was entered into the BP portraiture competition at the National Portrait Gallery in London. I was inspired at the time by the photorealist paintings of artists like Chuck Close, and the striking, vulnerable portraits photographed by Rineke Dijkstra. I wanted to honestly portray Hannah in oil paint, focusing on her face which fills the frame, the truthful, close-up headshot contrasting strongly with the perfected, airbrushed images in fashion magazines. I was aiming to get as close as I could to the original photograph, trying to attain the 'photorealistic' style. This original oil painting is painted on heavyweight canvas which has been stretched and mounted on a solid wood stretcher, has white painted sides and measures: 100cm W x 150cm H x 4cm D (39in x 59in x 1.5in). This artwork is signed by the artist.
