A painting I've done where I'm thinking about the changes going on in a historically rich place called Clydach Gorge. Shakespeare is said to have written 'A Midsummers Night Dream' in a cave here. The tall forms in my painting coming from the earth are inspired by Paul Nash's recent show at the Tate Britain. In an exhibition dominated by war and destruction (feels too close to where we are now, with world events) I found a small watercolour painting of horsetails standing in a cluster, like a group of people gathered trying to sort out the issues of the day. The texture of the painting surface is very important to me. I ‘listen’ to the surface, the texture, in the same way that I pay attention meditatively to the ground I walk on, the roads I drive and journeys I go on, thinking about the surface of the land from above. This painting speaks to me of walking and nature and society and life.
