About The Artwork

When visiting Sorrento and the Amalfi coast I was immediately captivated by the many charms to see there. One of the natural geographical features that I greatly admired was the ancient winding roads that snake along the coast. These roads are flanked by chalky white cliffs that drop steeply down to beautiful emerald seas below. The focus for this painting was to recreate one of these grand steep hillsides. What impressed me most about this particular one was the blanket of trees and vegetation that grew upon it. I painted the view from low perspective to emphasise its great size and to take viewer from eye level upwards to the top, crowned by some olives trees that stretch out towards the skies above. As with the other paintings in this series it was painted in an impressionistic style using reductive brush marks that limit just to the essential. The challenge with this was to decide what colours and marks go where and most importantly when to stop, as there is always the temptation to add more paint, as with required with other painting methods, and thus over working it. The process of doing this style is a fine balancing act of being focused in making decisions in what paint goes where, with being equally able to paint freely and intuitively. This may seem like a contradiction in aims, which only makes it all the more challenging to achieve, yet it is a very enjoyable and satisfying way of working, and highly rewarding with the end results. Additional Information: It was painted using Artists quality oils on canvas and signed on the front. It is unframed, this is left for the buyer to choose to suite their own tastes and decor requirements, although a frame is not absolutely necessary as it is painted on box canvas. Shipped using high quality packaging and materials to gallery standards.

Multidisciplined artist (painter, illustrator, designer, maker, musician, music producer and composer). Born 1968 and based in West Yorkshire, I specialise in creating contemporary landscapes, cityscapes, seascapes, portraiture and figurative oil paintings. My paintings are representational and often painted in series, or as part of a themed collection. I work in various opaque mediums and surfaces, though my preferred medium is oil on canvas, as this gives the greatest flexibly and richness of colour and quality of finish. Influences are many and varied, a few include Pissarro, Klimt, Grimshaw, Millais, and Waterhouse, and their processes and techniques have served as a fundamental teaching aid to my own learning. I come from a line of artists, which has had a very strong influence during my formative years. For the most part I am a self taught, after learning the rudiments through formal education, much of my knowledge of painting comes through countless hours practice over the past thirty years and more. My passion for art began at an early age and was greatly encourage throughout my childhood. I went on to study Graphic Design at Batley Art college in 1984. During this time I formed my first band, this eventually led to becoming a professional musician in the following years. Music remains to be a strong part of my creative practice, and to this day I continue to work with long time collaborator and close friend, award winning singer songwriter Shaun T. Hunter (aka Captain of the Lost Waves). Over the past decade we have produced several albums and music videos together. In 2006, after many years as an amateur artist I took up painting full time and began my professional practice. Since then I have taken part in numerous exhibitions, and my work has been sold through both bricks and mortar and online Galleries alike, and continue to gain ever growing number of customers and admirers throughout UK and beyond.
