Hillside Cliffs (Sorrento Coast) Painting

When visiting Sorrento and the Amalfi coast I was immediately captivated by the many charms to see there. One of the natural geographical features that I greatly admired was the ancient winding roads that snake along the coast. These roads are flanked by chalky white cliffs that drop steeply down to beautiful emerald seas below. The focus for this painting was to recreate one of these grand steep hillsides. What impressed me most about this particular one was the blanket of trees and vegetation that grew upon it. I painted the view from low perspective to emphasise its great size and to take viewer from eye level upwards to the top, crowned by some olives trees that stretch out towards the skies above. As with the other paintings in this series it was painted in an impressionistic style using reductive brush marks that limit just to the essential. The challenge with this was to decide what colours and marks go where and most importantly when to stop, as there is always the temptation to add more paint, as with required with other painting methods, and thus over working it. The process of doing this style is a fine balancing act of being focused in making decisions in what paint goes where, with being equally able to paint freely and intuitively. This may seem like a contradiction in aims, which only makes it all the more challenging to achieve, yet it is a very enjoyable and satisfying way of working, and highly rewarding with the end results. Additional Information: It was painted using Artists quality oils on canvas and signed on the front. It is unframed, this is left for the buyer to choose to suite their own tastes and decor requirements, although a frame is not absolutely necessary as it is painted on box canvas.
