About The Artwork

Acrylic on wood panel - A painting depicting female farmers in India - presenting the importance of small scale farming to eradicate poverty and keep a diverse plate of nourishing food within India. In turn playing a huge role in curbing environmental distruction and fighting against GMO crops like cotton and soybean. Their exposed breasts symbolise hope for an equal future. One of my favourite things to see were the baskets at markets on the roadside or balanced on women’s heads full of rich colour and varied goodies from tea, rose petals, spices, to fruit and vegetables.

My paintings have often been a response to the term ‘Mother’: both the beauty of motherhood and the anxieties that accompany it. The figure of the mother was always present nursing the child. More recently the work has focussed on the fruitfulness and fecundity of life in all its forms but principally the absorption in organic growth. Sometimes the abstracted plant forms represent in my mind the microscopic cell structures in nature. Occasionally less organic forms such as chicken-wire have been introduced as a reminder of constraints that are placed by man over nature. But throughout the primary desire is for focussing on growth, nurture, transformation, and more recently, the idea of mutation has entered in. Colour is paramount both referentially and in its pure, abstract state.
