When I was small and unable to read or speak, and the special education teacher was tired of me, the librarian took me to a quiet spot in her library and read stories to me. She read fantasy stories that cheered me up and also introduced me to the teachings of Buddhism and the Dalai Lama, Mahatma Ghandi, and others. She read to me softly and for as long as I wanted. I found solace in her voice, her floral scent, and her belief in me. She especially cued in on the Dalai Lama, where he has several teachings about the importance of listening. To listen is an art. And she said to me, "Don't you worry, James. You'll speak when you're ready. Until then, you only need listen, and I know that you are a very good listener." So this portrait is a tribute to the Dalai Lama and to my elementary school librarian, who changed my life forever.
