About The Artwork

M. Smalley was born in Warwickshire, England in 1945, close to The Shire’ in Hobbit Country. A professional Art director for an advertising industry, Smalley has launched Fuel Advertising in 1993, the company which became the one of first totally integrated software driven agencies in North America. Smalley’s art and creativity has developed over 40 years and in 2003 York University introduced the artist to his next career. Surrounded by learning and the learned and led by the spirits of the future, Mike discovered the love of painting. The blinding flash of perspective and purpose came when he collided with Clement Greenberg’s essay, ‘Modernist Painting’. Words so blunt, so obvious, yet so far reaching, it has led the artist on a journey that has only just begun. Smalley’s exploration into the complexities of abstraction can be attributed to a four-decade career in advertising and the freedom offered by leaving the intense industry discipline. His abstraction is ignited by figurative origins that carry with it marks, traces and gestures, creating a personal visual dialogue. The surface of the canvas is a continuous glimpse into his life's work, memories and experiences. Colour and process explore the architecture and narrative of the work, offering a window into a very different, yet a spontaneously intriguing world. It can be seen with the works on paper that there is another glance into his past with a collection of collages, incorporating typography, handmade paper and the written word. Both celebrate the new found freedom. Smalley has been shown in Canada and internationally, his work resides in New York, Los Angeles, London, Beijing and throughout Canada.
