About The Artwork

When I lived in Gwang Ju, South Korea, Wednesday evenings were art evenings. Each lesson would took place in a tiny room. A single lantern gave the room a cinnamon glow. Books, paints, and inkpots covered every imaginable surface and, while I am sure there was one, there appeared to be no logical coherence to the way it was all set up. This disarray just made me love the place more. My art teacher would carefully monitor my hand and arm movements. At times, he would (lightly) tap my arm reminding me to keep it level and controlled, once again, a marked contrast to my experience at the university where I was told to “let loose and let go”. We focused on a specific aspect of a tree, each class, the trunk, the leaf, and the branch. There was no moving forward until I had mastered each one. One evening, I was feeling particularly vulnerable. I missed home and was not as attentive as usual. My art teacher must have sensed something was amiss because when a customer came in, he asked the customer to translate, something he rarely did. While I cannot remember verbatim, my teacher had wanted to express the importance of the stroke used to convey the branch. It needed to illustrate both the beauty and fragility of the branch as well as its flexibility and strength. In the end, that is what I took away from that moment, feeling so alone and so far away from home. I suppose it is also what I hold on to at times like these and perhaps explains why trees for me, remain a constant inspiration. They are vulnerability and strength embodied.

Tasha Riley is a visual artist working and living in Brisbane, Australia. Originally born in London, Canada, she completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts Honours at Western University where she was awarded the Gold Medal for the BFA Honours program in Studio Arts (1997), The Benjamin Noble Award for Fine Arts in painting (1996), and the Greg Curnoe Art Award for Fine Arts (1993). She has also studied Korean traditional ink painting under regional in Gwang Ju, South Korea (1997-98). Tasha Riley's artwork has been featured in galleries including The McIntosh Gallery and the Palace at 4 am in London, Ontario, Canada. More recently her paintings have been featured in the juried Brisbane Art Prize Exhibition at The Judith Wright Contemporary Art Centre in Brisbane, Australia (2017 and 2016). Tasha's return to painting is inspired by her lived experiences and the world around her. Her paintings express emotions too difficult to convey in words--enabling a reconnection to the deeper self. Her art illustrates particular moments in time each representing relatable emotional states (angst; despair; joy; resilience). How do our personal experiences shape the way we view a painting? How might our perceptions shift when the painting is associated with words? Tasha has this to say about her art: “Painting allows me to express the things I want to say but I am unable to express…the pain of a loss too difficult to speak about, the feeling of rain after a long dry spell, the secret that can never be shared, the feeling of loving and being loved."
