Horace Metcalf had spent his whole working life at sea, as an Able Seaman in the merchant navy, he had retired four years ago, at the age of sixty eight and lived in an apartment within the Southampton seaman’s mission. He was small and wiry, had thick, neatly cut white hair, had never married, liked to smoke an old briar pipe and usually drank four or five pints of beer a day at the nearby Coopers Arms pub, usually propping up the bar alone, occasionally discussing distant destinations with other seafarers.
