About The Artwork

Hyphae II is part of a series of double-sided paintings which grew from playing with materials new and familiar, using paint, natural inks, recycled textiles to build up shapes and forms mimicking the structural elements of fungi (hyphae). Layers of colour and varying opacity build up to imagine the magnification of mycelium created through discovering and revealing textures, imprints, and marks. Patterns develop through the process of rotating the orientation of the canvas, informed by the elements visible through one side of the canvas to the other, resulting in double sided works, hung from the ceiling like a cross section of mycelial web in glass. The series was first exhibited in a solo show, Threadbare, which found its visual language through its raw shabbiness and exposure of frayed weft and weave. The works exist in dialogue with our evolving reckoning of the natural world, focusing on the incredible yet obscure fungal matter that forms the backbone of life. As the painting is double sided, it can be hung on a wall either way round or suspended from the ceiling showing both sides. There is a wooden baton at the top with nails for installation and a baton at the bottom to weigh the piece down.

In response to our changing world Bea’s practice explores the creator’s resourcefulness, adaptability, and innovation. Curious how the future will look and the concept of the symbiocene, her practice is increasingly driven by her interest in exploring sustainability and organic structures. She is captivated by the new green materials that will one day be integrated into our everyday life and the science that is pushing boundaries to create a more dynamic future for us. As she moves on, she has been challenging the sustainability of her practice – using paint as well considered as possible and expanding the ways in which she makes marks – she has also been turning to her domestic life to provide a new life to disposable items. As she rations the use of off-the-shelf materials, she uses recycled and collected materials thus works have developed a dimension of tactility. Born in 1993 and raised in London, Bea graduated from Wimbledon College of Arts with a BA in Fine Art: Painting. She moved to Rome in October 2021 where she is currently studying for her MA in Fine Art Painting, from Rome University of Fine Art.
