About The Artwork

The work is part of a series of pieces made for a science -art project based on immunology working with Dr Luis Graca of the of the IMM, Instituto de Medicina Molecular, Lisbon, Portugal. Funded by the Enlight-Ten research consortium and funded by EU. The work reflects we are who we are by defending against the 'other' by the power of the bodies lymphatic system, part of the immune system. In this case the body is defined by our fight against spores from fungi. The work is made of a watercolour made with fungal spores and the use of a stencil. The work from the project was exhibited at the WAAG Gallery, Amsterdam, Holland in a show titled Art Enlightening Immunology. See more at: - http://andrewcarnieimmunology.blogspot.com/?view=magazine

Andrew Carnie is an artist and academic. His artistic practice often involves a meaningful interaction with scientists regarding themes and ideas. A starting point is often recent scientific studies on the brain and neurology. His overarching concern is how we get a sense of our-selves, through science theory, ideas, and images. He works in a variety of media and scales, from watercolor and oil painting to large installations. The work is most often time-based in nature, involving slide projection using dissolve systems or video projection onto complex screen configurations. In a darkened space layered images appear and disappear on suspended screens, the developing display absorbing the viewer into an expanded sense of space and time through the slowly unfolding narratives that evolve before and around them. This work has been exhibited widely from the Daejeon Museum in South Korea to Exit Art in New York.
