About The Artwork

Oil and pencil on linen. This is an oil painting on linen where the top part reminded me of a dream where I was a kind of tree that was being sawed in half, and the bottom half there was a dickboat with feet. I made this into a painting from my sketchbook/journal. I have to say that it is very Amy Sillman inspired ala Carol Es - not that I want to talk about myself in the third person. That's annoying, isn't it? This is the part of the sketchbook where I draw first and write second. There were some interesting things I wrote after I drew this, like being an abandoned girl, molested and used. Also, that I saw a girl as a tree in a penis boat or a pea pod. "I see the tree girl split to reveal her womb box." Yet, I felt that the whole thing was funny, ironic, and felt a sense of release, confidence, freedom. I felt like I got in touch with myself in this work.

I grew up in Los Angeles and currently live in the Joshua Tree desert. I am an artist with physical and mental disabilities and identify as transqueer or nonbinary. I am also completely self-taught. I have been a drummer and an artist my entire life. I've toured the U.S. and Canada, and performed for large audiences, played groove/R&B/Hip Hop, jazz, rock n' roll, and studied with notable drummers, musicians, and producers. Earlier in life, I worked as a cutter in the garment industry with my family, beginning at age eleven. I wound up without a formal education and am completely self-taught, but have always been very self-determined. Along with making art, I also create handmade Artist's books. They've been widely collected and placed in major museum and university collections around the world. You can see them on my website at esart.com.
