It was the period of the Metropolitan structures, of the Industrial tensions, of desire machines, oppressed the slaves of a productive time. In a second phase there came the redemption of the machine. That was when the pieces, liberated from their mechanisms, from their concatenation to manufacturing structures, succumbed to their reveries. The wheels flew in concentric circles, helixes unravelled in spirals and the pistons whirled and whirled...one, two, three...one, two, three... to the rhythm of the waltz. Raising the white curtain of the canvas, dismantling the illusionary props, the form dispersed into movement, the movement became a dance. Mechanical ballets. Do machines dream of mechanical ballets?

Martín Carral was born in Meruelo (Cantabria, Spain) and moved to Barcelona at a very early age, where he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He began by investigating material expressionism and started a series of paintings inspired by the film Metropolis (Fritz Lang) which he developed over a decade. Carral began to focus on the representation of an underground city where the "Tunnel" was the concept of speed and the car together with a man was seen as a futuristic city. This series has been very prolific in terms of awards and exhibitions. First prize Ricard Camí Caixa de Terrassa (1989). Scholarship from the Santander Botín Foundation (1994). In 1995 he stayed at the Cite D'arts in Paris. ARCO Contemporary Art Fair where he participated in various editions with galleries in Barcelona and Santander. Of particular note, is his obtaining the First Prize for Painting by Torres García in Ciutat de Mataró (Barcelona, 2013). Martín Carral evolves towards a more kinetic and cosmic language by picking out colour. His work is reflected in large formats which are exhibited in various countries, Morocco, Barcelona, Atlanta, Cantabria, Florence.
