About The Artwork

"We can destroy but cannot deny the right to exist." Gusmen Heriadi was born in 1974 in Pariaman, West Sumatra and graduated from the Indonesian Institute of the Art (ISI) in 2005. In his current work, Gusmen Heriadi explores the conceit of human 'identity` and how it impacts the environment and the livelihood of other creatures, defining it in terms of Essence and Status. 'Essence` is what defines us and all living creatures … what forms us, what separates us, what we share, what we ignore. Respect for all living creatures should be equal, but as stated by the ruling pigs in George Orwell`s 'Animal Farm`, "All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others". In our world, 'human essence' is everything, with all other creatures regarded as commodities or consumerables. This lack of respect endangers the future of all species. 'Status' is about the position of an individual in relation to another, especially in regard to social or professional standing, and about the state or condition of affairs. For humans, status describes their standing in the community or society either through attainment, achievement or possessions. For animals, status is more critical, identifying their position in the chain f evolution and survival; endangered, valued, vulnerable. In their scramble for status, often at any cost, humans can mistake perceived value for true value, sacrificing and plundering valuable resources and even whole species in the attempt to impress others and boost their own egos. Finite resources face exhaustion in the face of infinite vanity. It is what truly defines us, and everything around us … 'essence' … and what we do with it to enhance our own self-deception … 'status' … that provides the tools for Gusmen to explore the 'human condition'.
