About The Artwork

The text in charcoal reads "À l'envers à l'endroit", or "upside down, right side up", or "back, and forth". I'm thinking of the song by Noir Désir which refers to a sort of dark, postmodern monotony where we keep finding ourselves on the top side or underside of the same thing. However, "À l'envers à l'endroit" could also refer to a sewing or stitching motion - the motion of the needle moving back and forth. The person who finds this monotonous is not backing up to see the pattern the stitch is creating. This is also a reminder that we can't always create or grow by staying on one side of things, but must cross a veil to come full cirlce, yet changed. It's often the inversion that gives the next phase meaning.
