About The Artwork

This raw, powerful acrylic painting was created in 2017 as an auto-biographical response to being an infertile woman in the modern age. I used my sub-conscious to create the piece and worked on it solidly for 5 hours without stopping, before its completion. The piece was created on the floor to create a physical presence and I walked around the painting whilst producing it. The sewing needle within the piece is surrounded by barbed wire and the needle transforms into a rifle, one reminiscent of the 1st World War, this was a deliberate inclusion and was a means to describe the 'no-mans' land I felt trapped in when I produced the work. The sewing needle represents predictable historical depictions of female homemaking and motherhood, and I love the tension the two apposing objects create, being both needle and rifle. Infertility makes you feel completely 'invisible' in a modern, family driven society and this painting was a deliberate attempt to explore the raw emotions of being on the margins and the corrosive effects of infertility. Whilst these experiences are highly personal, I believe that by exploring these emotions in my work I am creating a voice where one might normally be at risk of being suppressed and hidden. I want the viewer to be challenged, provoked and stopped by the presence of the piece and look closer at the mark making and symbolism the painting represents. It is meant to be a lament for an un-achievable goal and if the viewer can seek solace or their own narrative within the piece then it has succeeded as a painting that speaks for itself. This painting was shortlisted (along with Invisible i with red) for the prestigious BEEP International Painting Prize, Swansea in 2018. In 2-019 the painting was also featured in a new book WOMEN: Inspiring Quotes & Artistic Responses Volume 2, Pages 70 & 71 By Nicola & Andy Wild. ISBN: 978-1-9163232-1-6 Signed on the front.

I draw my inspiration from the constant possibilities of painting and the challenge of its unpredictable nature in conveying a subject. I am most interested in the process of painting and the expression it provides, translating a depth of feeling that is both personal but also shared with the viewer. Psychotherapy has directly influenced recent work and renewed my interest in abstract expressionism with the freedom of colour, line and allowing the subconscious and memory to guide my work. My current work explores the raw emotions I have experienced through personal challenges including the corrosive effects of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), infertility and a recent incurable auto-immune disease diagnosis. Whilst these experiences are highly personal, I believe that by exploring those emotions in my work I am creating a voice where one might normally be at risk of being suppressed and hidden.
