It's Almost Time Painting

Still life oil painting on canvas. This still life painting is a play on vanitas paintings, a genre of still life that emerged during the 16th century. These highly symbolic works of art focused on immortality and the impermanence of worldly pleasures. In part they were a commentary on such desires. I was drawn to the symbolic nature of vanitas and chose objects characteristic to these works however I have taken a more light hearted approach in terms of my interpretation. As I face my own feelings around aging and mortality time became an important component in the painting. I incorporated a simple clock with a bold circular shape and extreme contrast in color. The "black and white" nature of time alludes to mortality and form. The remaining objects within the still life are equally symbolic. Hinting at oppulance, entertainment and academia all things considered as earthly interests that can not be taken with us. Taking a light hearted approach to the subject of immortality was important to me and veers from the more "dark" aura and realistic renderings of traditional vanitas. While I identify with impermanence there is an undercurrent of life implied. This painting, in part offers up a celebratory context through color. Indicating a sense of vibrancy that can be found in present moment living vs. focusing on the advent of death and fear of the unknown. I created the painting on a gallery wrapped canvas.
