As a synaesthete I see music in colour and often collaborate with musicians and sound-designers in my work. Throughout 2020 - 2022 I have been working with the international collective Enid as a call and response between the played instrument and the visual response of my paintings. This release of stunning new paintings is in response to and inspired by my synaesthetic experience of the Enid project at all stages of development. As an artifact itself, Enid’s Yes! is an album produced during a single live performance as Laura Lee’s ethereal, fractured soundscapes combine with James Wright’s live studio manipulation, structured and punctuated by Mark Glaister’s tripped out percussion. Musicians and engineer form a single unit as live performance is simultaneously affected, recorded and mixed as the music itself is produced. The result is a dizzying mix of textures and influences, alternately calm and frantic, reflective and boundlessly explorative. In my response, oil paint, a traditional medium, has been pushed beyond the technical abilities of what is deemed possible, recommended or usual. This echoes the context of Yes! using pedals, speakers, and studio effects to create an entirely different sound to that of the instruments in their purest state. The pigment takes its own form, running across the canvas and splitting as the solvent evaporates, leaving pigment traces where they lie. This project and exploration of response has been ground breaking for me as an artist. I have found a serene way of communicating a way of viewing the world, bringing the viewer and me into a happy place. All surface, pigment, solvent and oils used are of professional quality, with a layer of varnish added for protection. Hardware is not provided as standard, allowing for framing and hanging options, but can be included upon request.

Karina Fraser is an abstract artist & mental wellbeing champion based in Hampshire, England. Mountains and travel are a passion whilst her synaesthesia provides a colourful lightshow to the music she hears. Connecting and disconnecting physical and psychological boundaries, these ideas are abstracted into layers; worked together, washed over, to create the calming, joyful and often playful works of art she has become known for. Graduating from Camberwell College of Arts, London in 2004, Karina has since worked as a freelance artist and curator, exhibiting both at home in the UK and internationally whilst working by commission. Most recently Karina has returned from a month long trip to Nepal where she trekked well over 100 miles through the Annapurnas, at altitudes of up to 5500m, creating artwork for those that crowdfunded the trip at the same time being the foil for continued recovery from severe anxiety disorders.
