Italian River Slum Painting

Based on a photograph I took whilst visiting Naples, the multi-faceted, mirrored scene was breath-taking both in beauty and squalor. Only very poor people lived here, but the limpid canal did not show its pollution on that day, and there was laughter from many of the flats, some shouting, one particular voice raised in hysterical outrage that was memorable because of its antiquity and cracked volume...a hundred cigs a day at least. This was a place of life and colour, of passion, humour and suffering, and it deserves to be remembered, and in a small way, celebrated.
