About The Artwork

Topographical: Relating to the arrangement or accurate representation of physical features of an area. Of art: Dealing with, or depicting landscapes, or other areas in a realistic and detailed manner. The TOPO series is a development of realistic depiction in my paintings, instead I have concentrated on how light falls on a subject. My work often remains formless; I do not want to carry any political charge in my subject matter, rather offer the spectator a reflection on their own perception, the formlessness allows me to connect with the viewer’s universal knowledge. With these paintings I needed a figurative subject; I chose scenes in nature and reduced their forms to the quintessential image of the subject. Each scene is fictitious, made of memories from films, books, photography and popular culture, through reducing these into their essential form, a connection can be made within the viewer. To escape from loaded topics of politics, ecology or social implications, and concentrate on light; I changed and exaggerated the colours, this disconnection from the real allows the painting to transcend our world and society to exist only in a perceptive plane, ambiguous from implications. Each paintings name is a specific fictitious word, made to induce the feeling of the scene the viewer looks upon. The scenes being about light, naturally cause senses of serenity and sublimity, these emotions can also be induced by tilting one’s head back allowing blood flow to the southern hemispheres of the brain, as was done with classical religious paintings offering a closer connection with God. Each name from TOPO is altered and made from older languages. Vibrations in speech resonate on the pallet of our mouths which vibrates the brain clearing out the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) that surrounds the blain, washing away chemicals and toxins. Older languages have kept more vibrations in their vocabulary. This is the same effect achieved through mantra chanting, creating vibrations to clear the mind and connect with the spirit. Each painting is glazed with a thick coat of acrylic glazer, giving it a uniform surface which creates a further depth within the painting, and bringing out the vibrancy of the colours. This layer also protects the painting from water or surface damage. The canvass has a curved edge and is painted on all sides, with name, signature, and fingerprint on the back.
