About The Artwork

"I need my Umbrella and Shows". This was the reply of Kathmandu's last Malla king. When entire Kathmandu was drunk in the night after a day-long celebration of YenYaa Punhi festival, Gorkha King Prithvi Narayan Shah attacked the highly developed city of the Newars, and asked its last king Jaya Prakash Malla, "What is your last wish? What can I offer you?" Shah who grew up in neighbouring city of Bhaktapur was well aware that not only in arts and music, even the words of Newar people were highly philosophical. Umbrella meant the crown and shoes meant all the land where the Malla King could walk around. Even today, when anyone wishes to see a beautiful and prosperous Kathmandu, I see him/her somewhere inbetween those umbrella and the shoes of Jaya Prakash Malla.
