About The Artwork

“In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order.” – Carl Jung. Nikko Lance explores the beauty of that chaos. The search for knowledge, of our place in the universe, is at the core of the human experience and the pursuit of scientists, mathematicians and theologians alike. This idea is the inspiration for Nikko Lance’s concept of “Apparent Chaos” represented in his work. To this end, Nikko employs a double pendulum to create each piece. The double pendulum is inherently ordered and must submit to the laws of physics. However, the movement appears entirely chaotic. While painting, Nikko is in a dance with the pendulum as it is in motion. He throws his invention into various ellipses, pause the paint flow, or redirects it to achieve a desired effect, but is still at the mercy of the chaotic movement. Nikko paints with heavy body acrylics and various mediums to thin the paint for flow. He paints with up to six colors at once creating a unique blending effect as the paint hits the canvas. To complete each painting, his work is finished with a professional varnish to protect the painting for years to come. All of Nikko’s work is signed while wet using colors from the painting so his signature blends in.
