About this Painting
Central to this painting stands a beautiful lady. We can’t see her face, yet she is elegant and beautiful. She stands with her friends and family watching, looking out to sea. We know her, she is familiar, she often features in my work, and although she is a fiction of the imagination, we see our mother, sister, daughter in her lovely profile and the gesture of her head, the shape of her shoulders, her hair pulled up high on her head.
This painting is about the closeness of our friends and family. When we come together and experience the elements of nature that captivate and stimulate our senses. These are the moments that we remember, that become part of our souls.

Inspiration
In new work for 2019, I continue to explore the gestures and stances of people. How they convey their emotions, conversations, intensity through the stance and gestures. These are painted using broad brush strokes in a semi-abstract way. There is not much detail in the actual people of these paintings and it’s not necessary because you can read them from their body language, their shapes, the angle of the head.

Brisbane, (Australia) born and raised, Narelle Callen is a visual artist and designer who has always loved art, drawing and painting. Raised in an artistic, creative family, Narelle spent much of her childhood and teenage years in northern New South Wales at her family beach house, photographing and capturing details of the beach and surrounds, that holiday feeling, sense of freedom and adventure. She continued this through her design study and still does this, interpreting these details in her art work. After studying Industrial Design at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Narelle worked for a number of years in both architectural and interior design. She went on to complete a Masters of Project Management with The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. After 17 years of getting quite absorbed and rather lost in large infrastructure projects, and finding herself more and more distracted with the driving need to create something meaningful and artistic herself, she returned to an artistic, creative career and is currently building her business, The Callen Collective, into a thriving arts business. Her artwork hangs in private collections in Australia and internationally. She is based on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, south east of Melbourne in Australia. www.callencollective.com.au
