Khayat Orchard (Underwater Forest) Painting

Since 2013 I have been drawing and sometimes painting around this old forgotten garden, built by the wealthy family Khayat in the 1930's, and abandoned for decades until recently a group of enthousiasts started to revive the place, barely assisted by the municipality who owns it. Part of my ongoing project of Secret Gardens and abandoned locations, it will be the subject of an exhibition in the Haifa History Museum in summer 2016. This painting came to me one afternoon when the play of light on the forest floor through the leaves made me feel like I was underwater and the sun barely filtering through. The water symbolizes many things, obviously a beautiful place past its glory days slowly sinking into oblivion, and also a womb of creative ideas, nurturing shelter and out-worldliness.
