About The Artwork

My most recent work addresses my highly conflicted emotions regarding the South and the complications inherent in reframing its identity. Having moved back to the South, after more than a decade away, my circumstances have changed and my sensitivity to racism is much more intense and instinctive. In many ways, this part of the United States has moved far from its ugly, racist past. Yet, not in all ways and certainly not completely. "KKKompass" is made of a range of maps of Atlanta from her history including the USGS map from the 1970s in the background and the battle of Atlanta of 1864 encircled by the oval. The painting is meant to highlight the beauty of the south, the pretty colors, the extravagant Compass Rose guiding us to that sense of self, of identity, of certainty but all the while there is a blatant affront to this idyllic setting hiding in plain sight. The new KKK symbol, much like the club's members, can blend in with its environment just fine, thank you.
