About The Artwork
The woman who posed for this painting is a good Italian mother. She enjoyed the time at the studio away from her daily routine however. I look at a lot of art for inspiration such as Piero della Francesca, Balthus, Cezanne and many others. This painting is was made using oil paint which I thicken with tuscan alabaster dust to give it a beautiful texture.

Lucy MacGillis was born in Pittsfield, MA in 1977 and has been painting in Italy since her graduation from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000. With grants from Upenn, she studied at Nick Carone’s International School of Art in Montecastello di Vibio and began a series of still lifes and landscapes there. MacGillis works from observation, mixing her own paint from raw earth pigments and linseed oil. She also teaches painting seminars internationally. MacGillis shows her work in Europe and the United States and now lives and paints on a hilltop in Umbria with her son.
