About The Artwork

“LA Sunsets” is a one-off I did during my last painting spell in the late 90’s, early 2000. This was to be the first of a Series that were painted on Movie Set wall scraps. Per usual, whenever a movie wraps (finishes) production, they generally discard the Set walls, at least back then they did (all wood is recycled now) and this was from the scrap pile of some long forgotten movie. The actual name of the movie it was from escapes me, a critical flaw of beginning the Series, but you can check my IMDb page and get an idea of which one it was from at the time, www.imdb.com type in John P Fleenor. This painting is basically a large and heavy (16lbs) panel painting, Gessoed over the pre-existing painted wood and un-tinted. I recently added a Natural Driftwood Border (Frame) to complete the “Recycled” theme. All driftwood pieces were collected during various family beach clean-up days at Malaga and Bluff Cove in LA. Painting is complete and ready to hang. There is a slight warp of the wood from being stored outside for a few years, it has been helped by the addition of the “frame”, but there is still a tiny curve. I always pictured this hanging in a Bar or Island themed restaurant of some sorts. Painting Details: (All materials used were current “models” from mid and late 90’s) - Movie Set Wall 24.5x48” (with border 27.5x51”) 16lb. and personally prepared with Gesso “under coat” - Brushes; Grumbacher Bristle, Flat #3, #4 #5 - Paint used; Winsor & Newton Artist Colour and Grumbacher PreTested (back when it was good), 15 different base colors mixed to hue and varying thickness - Final painting was sealed using 2 coats of High Gloss Damar Varnish Custom Frame Details: This painting is “framed” using natural driftwood pieces collected from the Pacific Ocean in LA. Each piece is hand selected and placed around the wall piece to create a “frame”, wood glued/nailed and screwed to the actual piece. -Over sized stainless steel eye hooks and heavy duty 14 gage galvanized wire hold this baby firmly against the wall and screwing/nailing the hanging hook to wall stud is an absolute essential due to the overall weight of the piece. As always, I welcome the opportunity to discuss making a similar Original Commissioned Piece (it will NOT be a copy, but shall have the same feel as the original). All Commissioned Painting requests are welcomed.

John is a Professional Photographer and traditionally trained Illustrator who is based out of Los Angeles, CA (aka Hollywood). Having been trained in all aspects of Film Photography in the 90's, where he won the "Most Outstanding Photographer" award his last year at University, he has never really wandered too far away from his film roots and his style and knowledge reflect that education. Currently, he shoots Images for TV shows and Movies where his work is seen around the world and featured in numerous Ad Campaigns. Apart from his "daily Hollywood" work, he considers his "Street Photography" imagery to be his true passion when it comes to his own "pure Photography." ---- With a background in Architecture/Design and Illustration, part of John's Education was in Oil Painting, a medium he instantly fell in love with at University. He has had a couple of start and stops over the years, but is now back in the "studio" whenever he can carve-out the time. John jokingly describes his Oil Paintings as, "Cheaper than going to therapy", and has been re-mused, painting with the passion he had when he first discovered the world of painting. His style has been described and "heavily Impressionistic" and it is something he takes great pride and joy in hearing. Ever challenging himself, John has always been attracted to the Pen & Ink Watercolor style of urban sketching and has now also added that Meduim to his arsenal of Art. "Watercolor is a fascinating medium to work with, it's alive and loves to do its own thing, many, many mysteries." he comments. Welcome to John's Saatchi Page and enjoy exploring.
