About The Artwork

A painting of calm sadness. This is a silent scream of pain and despair felt by all those who have to face the reality of wars and conflicts, through the quiet expression of a woman's sober appearance. No plans, dreams, or hope… everything that defines the human spirit has been removed. the arabic mandalas represent the woman's identity, her heritage. However, those mandalas are fading and her face is breaking, as she is loosing what defines her fabric, her constitution. The red ribbon shows that war is always present and destructive even if not wounded. This woman is Middle eastern, but she could be Asian, African or any other origin or group that suffered the impact of human conflicts. Her body is fading also into the background, an ephemeral existence that will soon vanish. That is why the title of this painting is "La-bas", which means "Over There" in french. For the world watching from afar, it will be just news from "Over There".
