Margot Rijven’s drawings and paintings explore basic human motives and our attempts to control them. The illusion that life can be manipulated is set against the undeniable and inescapable laws of nature. This tension expresses itself in Rijven’s work both through her use of materials and the subject matter depicted. Contrasting drawing and painting techniques are interwoven with beads, glitter and material piled up in layers on cut canvas and paper. This process creates gaudy collages in which the protagonists are people and reptiles found both in earlier epochs and the present day. The bizarre is mixed with the everyday in order to highlight the dichotomy inherent in the human condition.
