About The Artwork
I did this painting while I was at college at the Slade School of Fine Art in 1992. My Tutor David Hepher encouraged me to paint in the F studio which was the life studio then. I remember it being a fairly oppressive atmosphere. There was a group of painters who were heavily influenced by Euan Uglow and William Coldstream and had a rigorously methodical approach to life painting which involved plumb lines and grids. I was more influenced by artists like Derain, Soutine and Emil Nolde and liked a more direct approach to life painting.

I studied Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art (1990-1994) and then completed an MA in Fine Art at the University of Northumbria (1995-1997). I enjoy the immediacy of painting people and am inspired by painters like Alice Neel and Chaim Soutine who capture the humanity, energy and vulnerability of their sitters.
