About The Artwork

Oil on Linen My paintings are inspired by nature. Internal landscapes exploring color relationships. BBC Radio Interview, July 2018, Bristol, England https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p06fwm51 Spring Little Lone Lilies Wait One of three inherited potted plants over a decade ago After years of caring for the unknown foliage I awoke one morning to find a fine lone Calla Lily. Straight and tall, pure white centered about a fake butter color center, the spadix its called Phallic perky pose caught my eye as it winked proudly peeking from beneath surrounding spring green leaves Calle derived from "Kallos", Greek for beauty Alas I am not the flowers first admirer…Freud, Riveria, O'Keefe Zeus's wife unwittingly suckled a mortals son, Hercules. Discovering the betrayal the babe was thrown abruptly from breast allowing two single drops of milk to fall to the earth sprouting the worlds most inviting flower… Innocence Romans erotica… Venus, jealous of the flowers beauty enlarges its spadix Holiness, faith, purity I read An image appropriated by medieval artists pursuing elegant sacra conversazione symbols Colla lily = Virgin Mary Just one single sniff away from immaculate conception & resurrection Gifted in spring to bloom in summer Abandoned to allow survival A member of the "Jack in the pulpit" family I had been taught. Virgin who? As this brave single flower fades a cone filled with seeds forms undecided she hovers between sun and shade demanding to be moist I scrawl here "Victorian flower language" as a reminder on a personal list of abandoned stuff to study

Artist Statement: Painting is a process evolving from a collection of life’s many magical moments. From each moment an individuals iconography is woven. My alphabet is conjured from long walks around a floating city, through the woods, gardens and sandy shores of memory always gazing abroad towards tomorrow. All the while, the painting is a holistically intuitive process striving to evoke an aesthetic conversation on the necessity of joy.
