(work shown in a living room (frame not included) and close up details
(This work is currently under consignment); it was inspired by a story and travel to ancient places during the spring time. It tells a story of chase, love, loss, mystery, transformation and ultimately the unknown.

The ancient people of Siracusa (Sicily) had a legend - that the sweet water spring that paradoxically existed at the base of the salt water bay of their city was created when the Greek nymph Arethusa fled from her home in Arcadia. She was escaping the river god Alpheus, who had fallen in love with her.

After a long chase, Arethusa prayed to her goddess to ask for protection. Artemis hid her in a cloud, but Alpheus was persistent. She then was transformed into a stream. Artemis then broke the ground allowing Arethusa another attempt to flee.

Her stream traveled under the sea to the island of Ortygia - Siracusa, Sicily where she remained (and maybe, or maybe not, the river god joined her...no one knows).

Another part of her story says that later during the greek goddess Demeter's search for her stolen daughter Persephone, Arethusa entreated Demeter to discontinue her punishment of Sicily for her daughter's disappearance. She told the goddess that while traveling in her stream below the earth, she saw her daughter looking sad as the queen of Hades.

I hope in viewing this painting viewers will be transported both somewhere else, and somewhere within themselves.

I am a painter and mixed-media artist. I moved to London in 2017 after 10 years developing my practice, showing my work and living in Italy. My studio is now located in the London N22 Arts District. I make abstract symbolist paintings and mixed media works. Organic shapes, luminous colour and structured compositions are hallmarks of my 'magical realism' works, while intense brushwork and tempestuous land-sea scapes reflect a different aspect of my practice. I have been deeply influenced by growing up in the Western United States and by my time and experience in Italy, as well as by classic modernists’ works and colour theory. Occasionally I take on commissions for large works. I am currently represented by AfterNyne Contemporary and the bowie gallery in the UK and Kobe Biome in Japan.
