Love Fire Painting

This piece shows love as a state of becoming instead of as an ideal, fixed object. Flowers here are symbolic of love and are seen in various states of definition - fading in, fading out, burning, exploding, dripping. Love is experienced not as a thing, but as an activity - blooming, growing, evolving, and being consumed. Love Fire is a reminder to the collector to enjoy and honor the changing nature of their love, and to be more present in it, adding energy to it. I enjoyed creating different areas of high contrast.There are very stable, well defined shapes next to parts that are chaotic, spontaneous, or in transition. There is also a strong black/white contrast with white symbolic of potential love energy, and black for this energy as it's consumed. The gray and black smoke is Japanese sumi ink that I hand-ground to get more rich, subtle variations in darkness. The calligraphy to the left of the bouquet is French: "L'amour brule entre le qui et le quoi, entre desir et vampire." (Love burns between the who and the what, between desire and vampire. Quote by me, inspired by the philosophy of Jacques Derrida.)
