Luminescence Painting

A painting “Luminescence” is a diptych done on two separate canvases. In this painting, I was engaged by some things I love that currently make up my life. One of places in my house is kitchen with a living room. It is very picturesque. Some of my other things is jam, which covers the floor in this composition, a dog, and a tree that stays in the middle of the painting. In making this painting, I attempted to present the craziness and attempted to draw on representation verses abstraction in depicting people and a dog in various forms which partially resemble mechanisms. In doing so, I tried to underline a heaviness of human weight on the left as well as to make a metaphor of a person with ‘open drawers’ who grabs so much at the kitchen that one puts everything “in one's pockets” or drawers on the right. A final goal here was to connect a line between representation and abstraction and to add composition spontaneously as it was created. In this work, I used wide brush strokes aiming at different directions to show the dynamism of the painting and to create texture. In doing so, the objects around the painting seem more tangible. In places leading from the doorway, I used dry-brush technique to show the direction of light and create dynamism. On the right side of the canvas on a structure of a kitchen, I created a wash and used a bubble wrap to also add texture. On the plant pot on the left, I created a subtle impasto texture with a subtle stumbling as well as several fingerprints to also convey texture of its surface. I also added elements of elegant strokes on the surface of kitchen on the right side of the canvas to delicately show light on the kitchen stand. Finally, I used a cotton rope to encircle the painting to make a reference to Picasso’s first collages. I hope you enjoy.
