Punk was the bomb that went off in my life in the 70s, and nothing was ever going to be the same. The Sex Pistols 'never mind the Bollocks' was all I needed to tell me that things needed to change in society, but back then I had no real idea what it was that needed to change. We followed the Cramps about every time they toured in the UK. Lux Interior's performances were never the same, and always frightening in their intensity, now looking back I realise that his animalistic stage presence was what captivated me. As an artist I make work that is all about this strange contentious area between animals and us. Lux used to prowl that void. Now society seems to be more aware of the importance of animals and our environment and of course the animal inside us all. I worked many times from the same photograph and there are other paintings which feature it as a starting off point. This one I feel was the most successful, there is enough abstraction and strangeness. The journey of a painting is always interesting, sometimes there isn't much ground covered, this painting went a long way, just to the edge, where I like to dwell. I have built a back box frame to give this painting some solidity as it was made on a found piece of wood panel. All materials apart from the paint were found, thus not creating new demand and consumption. I hope the passion and animal nature of Lux is challenged through this painting.
