ABOUT THE ARTWORK

This painting was done on location in plein air. Soon after I started a little girl of about nine years old came up to me and we talked through the whole painting process. It turned out she lived in that house and she was very interested in what I was doing. I was trying to find a balance between realism and abstraction and I wanted to get the drawing of the house while keeping everything else very loose. I only made the smallest suggestion of the shapes of the surrounding trees and foliage. When I got to this stage I felt I would weaken the painting if I continued, so I stopped. I'm glad I did.

Thorgrimur was born in Reykjavík, in the southwest of Iceland in 1980. He spent his teens composing and performing music before enrolling at the School of Audio Engineering in London at the age of 23. After London, musical aspirations led him to the Royal Conservatory in den Haag, Holland, from where he graduated in 2010. However, having aquired an interest in oil painting during his stay, he found he was further able to articulate his creative outlet in a visual medium, and has almost exclusively focused his attentions on oil painting since then. Whenever possible, Thorgrimur prefers to work from direct observation, believing it to be the optimum way of creating an authentic look. Even though he finds inspiration in a variety of subjects the landscape, his greatest passion, continually finds its way to his canvas. Working in the Alla Prima style of painting, Thorgrimur expresses his subject in what he likes to describe as painterly realism. Maintaining an emphasis on “accurate” drawing, values and color, he aspiers to capture his subject as honestly as possible while articulating its emotinal impact.
