MADONNA AND CHILD Painting

I like certain icons and devotional paintings very much; not that I’ve ever wanted to be a devotional painter or anything like that, I just like the power of these paintings. However, a few years ago, the idea of the Madonna and Child theme had been running through my mind, with emphasis on Byzantine art and the Christ child rendered as a full adult but very, very small, when compared to the Madonna’s figure. Also in my thinking was Cimabue, Giotto, the Mannerism movement approach to the theme, such as Parmigianino, and those in that movement who rendered the Christ child as if dead (I know this is somewhat strange, but it is more metaphysical than morbid) . In this mix, I brought in Gauguin’s “The Yellow Christ” for its unusual rendering of the depiction of Christ. The Madonna and Child theme was a thought that wouldn’t leave me and I began doing a number of small drawings connected to the theme, without thinking of taking it any further. Naturally, I wasn’t interested in copying anything that had been done before and I was looking at my rendering as being a modern approach. Ideas of abstraction moved in and the idea moved in another direction, pulling all the influences together into an odd mixture, which began to include Giorgione’s “Castelfranco Madonna”. As you can tell from what I have said, I was dealing with a very odd mixture! I didn’t think it would go anywhere, but I was given some canvas and I found myself pulled towards trying out the idea. Well, long and short of that, I now have a Madonna and Child painting, but it is odd because, while it is informed with the theme, the elements have been so distorted and pushed around and abstracted, that I think it would be very hard to know what you are looking at if you weren’t told what it is. Plus, it is not representative and contains compositional touches that balance the painting but which are not connected to associated ideas of the Madonna and Child theme. As you can tell from this description, the end result is ‘odd’, not to mention unlike anything I have done so far. The artwork is painted on all sides and strung with wire for hanging, so the painting is ready to hang.
