About The Artwork

The first significant insight into vanilla (besides its flavor) was through a story I was told some time ago, about a vanilla tree that lay in my maternal grandmother's yard back in Veracruz, which it had been planted by a cousin when she was still a child. Some time later, with my interest in plants, attracted by the repertoire of wonderful botanical illustrations, in addition to their ritual, medicinal, edible, dyeing and other uses... I gradually delved into what a friend once called "the search for my roots" in a kind of genealogical archaeology. Then I knew that I have been collecting data and stories that I later transform into illustrations merely as self-pedagogical acts, speaking in them of the uprooting, the dispossession and the mysteries of my own history. Such is the case of this story, the Totonac legend of vanilla, a vine orchid flower that grows climbing through the stem of a bush, a magical product of the tragic femicide of princess Tzacopontziza who, having disobeyed her father, was stripped of her equal heart and at the same time as her lover, shedding her blood and viscera on the mountain where later a small tree with flowers grew and when the flower died it was transformed into vanilla, permeating forever with its smell the memory of the death of that love. It is the representation of the sculpture of a female torso located in the Gulf of Veracruz and the representation of vanilla. While I was painting I couldn't stop thinking that I too would have liked to plant a tree in my grandmother's house.
