About The Artwork

Magical 60” x 48” Original mixed media artwork . I love working outside in the elements, I feel closer to Nature as my work is often quite big also. I like the expanse of the outdoors. This was created in Margate where I live and I was painting this in the late afernoon from my imagination when the evening approached the sunsetting in the trees and sky began to mimic the artwork I was painting . Literally matching it . See image. Here I used a combination of inks, oil pastels, sprays, mineral pigments, gouache and oils in a layering effect. There is marbling inks also added which give a beautiful flat sheen to the darker areas where the land is. The sky became a blaze of colour of oranges, browns, copper, yellows and golden whites and even deeper colours as the sun set. The Kent Coast has been known for hundreds of years as an inspirational place for painters and people seeking peace by the Thanet Coast as it is known

Growing up in a isolated farming community it was fascinating to see the relationship between humans and the landscape. the toiling of the earth and the relationship between water, ice ,heat ,erosion was all around me at a very simple level. The corrosion on the metals from relentless rain on the farm or the slices of rock I found in the valleys formed this obsession with Time as a great creator and destroyer. I had to put this down on paper, the shapes and colours all around. I invented new techniques of creating the textures and layers and the landscapes I loved so much on my travels as an adult. Taking the subject of landscape painting and abstract art and turning it on its head using burning, smashing, layering with raw materials from geology itself such as sand, salt, quartz, diamond dust, gold leaf, iron.crushed precious stones to create an effect of real geological processes. Recyled papers and shredded plastic pieces I find, recycled heated glass are new ways of using our excessive planetary waste to create something beautiful.
